Is your workplace retirement plan Halal? What to check in a pension plan.

Golden shield, coins, sprout symbolize halal, secure, growing retirement investments

Your employer set it up and your paycheque funds it. But do you know what it's invested in?

For many Muslim Canadians, a group retirement plan is their largest investment and also the one they've looked at least. It gets set up during onboarding, contributions come off every paycheque, and the statement arrives quietly each quarter.

It's worth a second look because of how these plans handle members who never make a choice.

The default you didn't pick

Many group RRSPs and defined contribution pension plans put members into a default investment option if they don't select one. That default is often a balanced or target-date fund.

Both types typically hold bonds. Target-date funds go a step further. Like the age-based education plans we covered earlier this month, they gradually shift from equities toward fixed income as the target date approaches. Islamic scholarly bodies generally classify conventional bonds as impermissible, because their return is interest on money lent. So a fund you never chose may be increasing your exposure to interest-bearing instruments over time.

How to find out what you hold

Log in to your plan administrator's member portal or check your latest statement. Note the name of each fund your contributions go into. Then look up each fund's fact sheet, which lists its asset mix and top holdings.

Questions to ask HR or your plan administrator

  • Which fund am I invested in, and is it the plan's default?

  • What other investment options does the plan offer?

  • Is there a Shariah-compliant fund on the menu?

  • Are there fees or restrictions on switching funds?

  • Can money be transferred out of the plan while I'm still employed?

If you're in a defined benefit pension, you generally don't choose the investments, and your benefit is paid according to a formula. That raises different questions, which are best put to a qualified scholar.

The match is a separate question

If your employer matches your contributions, the match is part of your compensation. Whether the match is received and where the money is invested are two different questions. Declining the match doesn't change what your own contributions are invested in.

If you don't like what you're invested in

You may have more options than you think, although what's available depends on your plan's rules.

Switch within the plan. Most group plans let members change their investment choices, often online. If a Shariah-compliant fund is already on the menu, redirecting future contributions and moving your existing balance are often two separate instructions. Confirm that both have been done.

Ask for a compliant option to be added. The plan sponsor, usually your employer, chooses the fund lineup and can change it. A written request to HR tends to carry more weight than a passing comment, and a request from several colleagues carries more still.

Find out whether money can move out of the plan. Some group RRSPs allow transfers to an individual RRSP while you're still employed. Others don't, or they restrict amounts tied to employer contributions. Money in a registered pension plan is generally locked in while you remain employed, and specific rules apply when you leave. Your administrator can tell you what applies to your plan.

Understand what a withdrawal involves before making one. Taking money out of a registered plan generally has tax consequences. That's a question for a qualified tax professional before any decision is made.

Ask about past income. If you've held a non-compliant fund for some time, questions about purifying that income are best put to a qualified scholar.

Start with the statement

You don't need every answer this week. You just need to know what you own, and to know that you have options.
